Joseph Anthony Russo

Joseph Anthony Russo was born in Brooklyn, New York. A mosaic artist/designer and architect, was originally impressed by the expressiveness of contemporary mosaic. Self-trained in mosaic principles and techniques early-on, was influenced by the architectural mosaic of New York School modernist Hans Hofmann. Continuous experimentation has resulted in a body of work that reinforces the function of mosaic as architectural art in that subject matter is reduced to the shape and form of the built environment. This technique minimizes the need for extraneous background, decreases the amount of material needed, and reduces material costs as well as physical weight. As architect, served as co-chairperson in the Architecture and Allied Arts Committee of the American Institute of Architects. Exhibition of work has been at local and national levels and is included in the private art collections of St. Vincent College, Pennsylvania.
